In recent years, toymaker Hasbro has been working on flipping its various toy and entertainment brands into bigger film franchises.
We’ve endured years of the Transformers franchise already, but in addition to projects like a new Dungeons & Dragons movie, there’s a G.I. Joe origin movie coming—and Paramount Pictures just unveiled a first look with a new teaser trailer.
G.I. Joe is one of those franchises that Hasbro has been tinkering with over the years: there’s a live-action TV series about Lady Jaye currently in the works, and we’ve had two live-action films since 2009—G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. This new film, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, follows the eponymous lead (played by Crazy Rich Asians’ Henry Golding) as he cuts his way through legions of bad guys.
The spinoff has been in the works since 2018. Golding replaced Ray Park—the stunt actor used for the prior G.I. Joe movies—in the lead role.
As we see in the teaser, there’s plenty of action: Snake Eyes is recruited into a shadowy organization where he’s trained as a ninja, and later forced to figure out what path he wants to take. The film has all the looks of a prequel thriller and, presumably, its success (or lack thereof) will help determine the fate of the franchise.
Snake Eyes is slated to hit theaters on July 23rd.
